EU's focus on renewable energy 'undermining' investment in carbon capture technology, warn MEPs

The EU must drop its "slavish and counter-productive obsession" with renewable energy targets and embrace alternative low carbon solutions such as carbon capture and storage (CCS), British MEP Vicky Ford has warned.

Carbon Storage Studies Grapple with Politics, Geology

Follow the Hudson River a few miles north of New York City and look west across the water, and you’ll see a series of cliffs called the Palisades, made of dark gray volcanic rocks called diabase. Thousands of feet underground below those cliffs may be clues for how carbon dioxide could be stored, or sequestered, near numerous sources of carbon dioxide emissions not far from the largest population center in the country. Carbon capture and storage is one solution the U.S. Department of Energy is researching for reducing the volume of climate change-fueling greenhouse gas emissions that are released into the atmosphere from coal-fired power plants throughout the region

Carbon capture is vital

On the contrary (42% of UK population unaware of carbon capture and storage – poll, 16 July), it's encouraging that nearly half of us appreciate how vital CCS is as a tool for tackling climate change. We're going to need all forms of energy, including low-carbon options, to meet rising demand.

Capturing Carbon is Real and Used to Enhance Oil Recovery

Carbon capture and storage seems like a distant concept. But some experts are saying that aspects of the tool are very much within the nation’s grasp, especially if such releases are used for the purpose of enhanced oil recovery.

European investment bank to stop financing coal-fired power plants

The European Investment bank (EIB), the EU's main lending arm, said it would stop financing most coal-fired power stations to help the 28-nation bloc reduce pollution and meet its climate targets.
